The Board of Advisors

The Strategic Advisory Board comprises senior-level executives who have built successful businesses and/or are affiliated with major Hispanic, Latin American and multi-national companies. These executives are aware of the trends and opportunities which are impacting the Hispanic sector.

These individuals are also available to help portfolio company executives with advice concerning their company’s strategic and operating issues. In certain circumstances, these advisors may sit on the boards of portfolio companies to further assist Nexos and senior management to guide the direction of the portfolio company.

Rudy M. Beserra

Vice President, Latin Affairs, The Coca Cola Company

Rudy M. Beserra is vice president of Latin Affairs for The Coca Cola Company. He began his career at The Coca Cola Company in 1989 after having served as special assistant to President Ronald Reagan on Latino and Small Business Affairs.

A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Mr. Beserra has held a number of distinguished positions including special assistant to the Chairman of the National Republican Committee in charge of Hispanic and Business Affairs. Mr. Beserra is an active board member of a number of prominent Latino-focused organizations, including NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials), LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. He is vice chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and past chairman of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

In 1991, Mr. Beserra was awarded the Hispanic Community Commitment Award by the Latin American Management Association. In 1994, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presented him with a Special Recognition Award and in 1995, he received the Hispanic Leadership Award from the National Puerto Rican Forum.

Gil de Cárdenas

President, Don Gilberto Foods, Inc

Mr. de Cárdenas was until recently the President of Cacique Foods, Inc, the national producer and distributor of Hispanic cheeses and other products. He is currently launching a new Hispanic food company, Don Gilberto Foods, Inc, that will focus on the packaged meat market targeted at Hispanic consumers. Mr. de Cardenas spent 20 years at Cacique, rising from operations supervisor to President of the company in 1995. As President, he developed and executed a five-year expansion plan which more than doubled revenues to over $120 million and established Cacique as the largest national brand in the Hispanic cheeses and creams categories.

Mr. de Cárdenas has an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Carlos García Moreno

Chief Financial Officer, América Móvil, SA de CV

Mr. García Moreno has been the CFO of América Móvil, the largest wireless operator in Latin America, since January 2001, shortly after the company was created following the spin-off from Teléfonos de México (Telmex). Prior to joining América Móvil, Mr. García-Moreno was the Director General of Public Credit for the Mexican Ministry of Finance, where he was directly responsible for all internal and external debt management for the Mexican government.

From 1995 to July 1997, Mr. García Moreno was responsible for the Mexican investment banking business of Swiss Bank Corporation. Before joining SBC, Mr. García Moreno worked for Mexican oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), which he first joined in 1989. By 1990 he was responsible for all market-based funding for Pemex.

Mr. García Moreno received an MA degree from Cornell University.

Clarence B. Jones

Executive Consultant, Marks Paneth Strategy Group

Mr. Jones currently serves as Executive Consultant at Marks Paneth Strategy Group, a leading consulting firm that helps nonprofit organizations.

Mr. Jones was former counsel and speechwriter for the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In April 1963, as counsel to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., together with Charles Morgan, Esq., he successfully negotiated with the City of Birmingham, Alabama a settlement of the civil rights demonstrations for desegregated department stores and public accommodations.

Mr. Jones was also the first African-American partner in a Wall Street investment banking firm, Carter, Berlind & Weill, Inc. (included among his partners were Sanford I. Weill and Arthur Levitt, Jr.). Mr. Jones was the co-founder and Chairman, President, and CEO of the Intramerican Life Corporation (subsequently acquired by the Colonial Penn Group); co-founder of Urban National Corporation and Inner City Broadcasting Corporation. Mr. Jones has served as investment banker and strategic advisor to such media firms as Dover Film Finance, Ltd.; Padell, Nadell, Fine & Weinberger and The Heritage Television Network.

He is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University, New York, and the Boston University School of Law (LLB and JD degree).

Brett Mayer

Principal, Hispanic Retail Group and related entities

Mr. Mayer and his partners (including Jose Legaspi) control several real estate development companies and have formed The Hispanic Retail Group (HRG), which is the first real estate private equity fund focused on Hispanic neighborhoods. HRG is a $100 million fund whose strategy is to reposition and develop retail projects in the prime Hispanic markets of the western U.S., with planned national expansion.

Mr. Mayer has extensive experience in real estate ventures in the U.S., Latin America and Eastern Europe. He was a partner for 15 years with the Heitman Organization, which was founded by his father and two partners. Heitman currently has $11 billion in real estate assets and has managed investments for over 200 pension funds. While at Heitman, Mr. Mayer managed several large real estate portfolios which were funded by major U.S. pension funds.

Mr. Mayer holds a Bachelor of Science and Arts degree in real estate and finance from the University of Denver and a Masters in Communications from Loyola Marymount University.

Luís & Maria Cristina de la Vega

CEO and President, Professional Translating Services, Inc.

Mr. and Mrs. de la Vega own and manage the largest translating services company in the Southeastern United States. Founded by the de la Vegas in 1973, the company now has offices in New York, Atlanta, Detroit and Cordoba (Argentina) in addition to its headquarters in Miami. Mr. de la Vega is fluent in nine languages and Mrs. de la Vega translates Spanish/English simultaneously, in addition to managing business development. The company’s client list includes many multinational corporations such as Microsoft, Unisys and Johnson & Johnson, and Mrs. de la Vega has interpreted for many dignitaries including President Bush, Florida Governor Bush and several Latin American heads of state.

Mr. de la Vega holds PhD, MA and BA degrees in Modern Languages. Mrs. de la Vega is a trustee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and a Miami Chapter Member of the Women Presidents Organization. Under her leadership, the Company has been certified as a Woman Business Enterprise by the Women’s Business Enterprise Council.

Patricio Wills

President and CEO, Telemundo-RTI Productions

Mr. Wills has been President and CEO of Telemundo-RTI, the division of Telemundo responsible for television content production, since 2003. From 1978 until 2003, he rose from production manager to President and CEO of RTI, the leading Colombian television production company.

Over his 27 years in television, Mr. Wills has been involved in the production of over 35 telenovelas, multiple game shows, reality programs and documentaries. He has collaborated with many of Latin America’s most important writers (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and others) in the development of telenovelas, and led the international distribution effort of RTI which resulted in distribution agreements with companies such as Disney, Discovery, Telemundo and Televisa.
